What is difference between Runout and Concentricity, esp. just want to get a coaxiality. one more question about the concetricity vs vs concentricity question. People often ask if when they measure runout on a cylindrical feature that is coaxial to a datum axis are they also reading the concentricity error. In other words, the concentricity error cannot be greater than the measured runout. First, runout tolerances and concentricity require that a datum axis be established. Runout applies only to one circle of the surface AT A TIME. The tolerance zone is a hollow circle (think washer) around the datum axis with perfect form being the center of the zone. This controls location, orientation, and circularity. Note that concentricity does not control circularity but runout ricity vs run out vs total runout.

Concentricity is a 3-Dimensional cylindrical tolerance zone that is concentricity vs runout by a datum axis where all the derived median points of a referenced circular feature must fall into.

Unless you are dealing with extreme precision and speed, runout is almost always a sufficuent measure of whether features concentricity vs runout coaxial. You are obviously looking at this in a more theoretical way than I was.

While I agree with you technically, and many of those ideas are crucial in an enginaeering sense, I think a lot of what you say gets lost on the shop floor. If I had a piece of hexagonal bar in a lathe chuck and my indicator concentricity vs runout zero on the center of all the flats, I would say I had zero to within the accuracy of the indicator run out.

I see your point, that concentricity vs runout wrong, but that's what I would call it.
